The XX deliver music industry careers experience to local young people

Careers experience just got officially upgraded by the team behind The XX's Day + Night festival, running this week in Brixton. In partnership with Artist Pledge, The XX are collaborating with seven local initiatives in their efforts to support the local community throughout the week. Social enterprise Spiral Skills kicked it off with a unique careers industry showcase for the benefit of media students from Lambeth Careers College.

The workshop invited young people to design a tour campaign for their chosen artist, from budgeting tasks and booking tour dates, to marketing and designing merchandise. Music industry insights were provided by professional volunteers from the Day + Night team, including; XL Recordings, EYOE, Young Turks, Coda and local artist Toyboy and Robin. The music industry showcase culminated in a dragons den, with young people pitching back their campaign proposals to the Day + Night team.

To top off a fantastic day, young people engaged by the workshop are now being referred into paid internship opportunities with the record labels and promoting agents involved in Day+Night. Watch this space!

The day was designed and facilitated by the team at Spiral Skills with thanks to Artist Pledge and kind hosts Livity UK. Spiral deliver careers education to young people most at risk of becoming #NEET (Not in employment, education or training). Through engaging interactive workshops, we invite young people to try a career, before they buy it. Young people gain impartial insight from professional volunteers, and build transferable skills by undertaking challenges that replicate the working world. We know with improved career insight and skills, young people can achieve sustained and most importantly fulfilling employment.

We'd like to say a monumental thank you to the Day + Night team and Artist Pledge. It's refreshing to see big brands sharing their expertise for the benefit of local communities. We look forward to seeing their work with other local partners 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning, Brixton Green, Marcus Lipton Community Enterprise, Photofusion, Raw Material and the Baytree Centre.
