Young people step up to the plate for Bhangra Burger's street food competition

Spiral Skills and Bhangra Burger joined forces to inspire local students at Lambeth College into catering careers with a MasterChef-style street food competition.

Young people were challenged to create a side dish that fused Bhangra Burgers aromatic Indian street food flavours with ingredients that represent Brixton's local food culture. By way of example, Bhangra Burger showcased their Jindian Wings, scrumptious jerk chicken wings with a spicy Indian batter (dutifully gobbled by the Spiral team). Winning creations from young people had the incredible opportunity to secure a place on Bhangra Burgers menu in Pop Brixton.

Young people steamed ahead, mixing spices, creating new flavours and broadening their culinary horizons. Bhangra Burger Founders Alec and Liz, alongside Chefs Malik and Steven, supported students through the tasks, sharing tricks of the trade as they went. It's safe to say, student's efforts were completely delicious, producing dishes like Yam Patties, Naja Spiced Chips, and Okra Fiesta.

We were lucky to be joined Head Chef Andrew Whitson, who judged their creations and noted the skill and creative flair students had displayed. So much so, that all three side dishes made it on to Bhangra Burgers menu! The inspirational workshop has also lead to some students gaining work experience with Bhangra Burger, one of Brixton's most popular street food restaurants.

Spiral would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the team at Bhangra Burger, and to Lambeth College for letting us spice up their kitchen for the day. Enriching experiences like these can have a transformative effect on a young person's life, so we're endlessly appreciative of everyone's efforts.
